The Plaza at Waikiki is a brand new senior-housing center in Waikiki and just opened at 1812 Kalakaua Ave, which is a parcel we sold earlier this year. The facility provides independent, assisted-living and memory-care services to seniors age 60 and above. They’ve had over 600 inquiries in the last 8 months from potential residents and family members, which Colby Takeda said is the most they’ve had for any of their locations. The exciting thing in our opinion is how the Plaza is set up more like a hotel for its residents; they have parking, a hair salon, a movie theater, a gourmet-coffee bistro, and outings to the theater and other performing arts. They can also stay at the Plaza short-term while their families vacation or their families can stay with them at the Plaza while they vacation. It is wonderful to see a new, thriving development at this intersection and the facilities’ neighbors are happy to see the changes coming to the area already. It is important in commercial real estate to not forget about the elderly because, especially in Hawaii, they represent a demand in the market. There needs to be more high-quality senior housing developments like this one because our elders deserve the amenities, walkability, and opportunities that a hotel or similar accommodation would provide.
